Neighbourhood Description
Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel) is a small fishing village situated just over three miles south of Penzance. It was once a busy harbour, famous for landing huge catches of Pilchards. The village has kept much of its historic character and today is very popular with visitors during the summer.
The Mousehole Christmas Lights are famous throughout Cornwall and beyond and are put up (and taken down) each year by a dedicated team of volunteers. Tom Bawcock’s Eve (23 December) is always celebrated with great enthusiasm in the village; it celebrates the efforts of Tom Bawcock, the legendary Mousehole fisherman, who is said to have saved the villagers from starvation by going out in a severe storm to fish.
Mousehole is an idyllic village and fishing port with quaint cobbled streets full of bistros and art-galleries. Sit on the harbour and admire views of St Michael’s Mount or take a short drive to nearby Marazion to walk along the golden sands.
Mousehole is a great community with a fantastic atmosphere, and self catering in Mousehole is effortless. Enjoy harbour views and artisan foods at Mousehole Deli & kitchen, afternoon tea at the Tremayne Tea Room or sit down for an evening meal at 2 Fore Street, a French bistro-style restaurant on Mousehole harbour front. Finish off your evening with a pint of local ale at the Ship Inn, one of the famous St Austell Brewery establishments.
