Neighbourhood Description
Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel) is a small fishing village situated just over three miles south of Penzance. It was once a busy harbour, famous for landing huge catches of Pilchards. The village has kept much of its historic character and today is very popular with visitors during the summer.

The Mousehole Christmas Lights are famous throughout Cornwall and beyond and are put up (and taken down) each year by a dedicated team of volunteers. Tom Bawcock’s Eve (23 December) is always celebrated with great enthusiasm in the village; it celebrates the efforts of Tom Bawcock, the legendary Mousehole fisherman, who is said to have saved the villagers from starvation by going out in a severe storm to fish.

Mousehole is an idyllic village and fishing port with quaint cobbled streets full of bistros and art-galleries. Sit on the harbour and admire views of St Michael’s Mount or take a short drive to nearby Marazion to walk along the golden sands.

Mousehole is a great community with a fantastic atmosphere, and self catering in Mousehole is effortless. Enjoy harbour views and artisan foods at Mousehole Deli & kitchen, afternoon tea at the Tremayne Tea Room or sit down for an evening meal at 2 Fore Street, a French bistro-style restaurant on Mousehole harbour front. Finish off your evening with a pint of local ale at the Ship Inn, one of the famous St Austell Brewery establishments.

Neighbourhood-
The house is located in Rinsey a quiet coastal hamlet on the outskirts of Porthleven, a beautiful harbour town with many pubs, restaurants and galleries. A stroll along the cliffs will get you there. If you want to explore St Ives and Marazion, these are roughly 15 minutes drive.

Rinsey – is a lesser known Cornish beach, with loads of great assets (beautiful rock pools, gullies & caves to explore, as well as sandy safe swimming) but the car park gets really rammed so it’s a great to have this nearest beach on your doorstep and just a few minutes down the cliff path to get to it.

Praa Sands is an incredible mile of golden sand which is only a short walk West along the cliffs – and it has nice bars and great surf the Boatshed Activity Centre offers Surf Lessons and Coasteering excursions, as well as paddle board hire.

Wheal Prosper Mine is just on the doorstep too- It was a working mine between the years 1860-1866 and was intended to mine tin and copper from the Porthcew Lode. Today, you can admire the building’s most prominent feature, the 30″ pumping engine house erected on Engine Shaft. This was designed to pump water out of the mine.

Even today, the building is in excellent condition after being managed by the National Trust.

Visitors to this site can look forward to views across Mount Bay and down to Rinsey Cove. Walkers who are trekking along the South West Coastal Path can use Wheal Prosper as a spot to rest and relax with a bit of lunch. Whilst beachcombers can take the footpath down to the beach!

If you are travelling with a four legged friend there are no restrictions on dogs at Porthcew Beach (just down the road) so they are welcome on the beach all year round. The cliffs are high on the coast path around here so keep dogs on a lead when walking nearby. Rinsey Cove also makes a perfect spot for a wild swim on a calm day.

Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts.

Whitby is absolutely worth visiting as it has much more than your average seaside town – there is a wonderfully scenic steam railway and an increasingly exciting food and drink scene. There are so many things to do in Whitby that it’s well worth making a weekend of it!

Things to do

Climb the 199 steps
The two top things to do in Whitby go together; climb the 199 steps from Church Lane up to St Mary’s church and Whitby Abbey. Nobody really knows how old the 199 steps are, but they date back to at least 1340.

Visit Whitby Abbey

After you’ve climbed the 199 steps, you should visit the abbey. Visiting Whitby Abbey is absolutely one of the best things to do in Whitby, and this site is one of the most historic in the north of England. The ruins you see today are around 700 years old, but there has been a settlement here on Whitby’s headland for around 3000 years.

Eat fish and chips

By now you’ll have worked up an appetite, so it’s time to try another of the best things to do in Whitby; eat fish and chips. There are loads of fish and chip shops in Whitby but the most popular one by far is the Magpie Cafe on the harbour front – you’ll know it by the queue outside!

Have a lemon top ice cream

After you’ve had your fish and chips, you might be in the mood for something sweet, so get yourself a lemon top ice cream. While you can get this delicious combination of vanilla ice cream and lemon sorbet elsewhere on the Yorkshire coast, you’ll see them everywhere in Whitby.

Go to the beach

No trip to Whitby is complete without setting foot on one of the lovely sandy beaches. There are four beaches in Whitby; three small beaches at the foot of the headland, where you’ll find the Abbey and the old part of town. On the other side of the river, Whitby’s main beach is at the foot of the West Cliff.

Have a pint in a cosy pub

Whitby is full of cosy, historic pubs. Take a seat by the fire and take in an atmosphere that hasn’t changed for generations. The White Horse and Griffin (which dates back to 1681), the Granby and the Endeavour are all favourites with visitors to Whitby – all are dog-friendly and at the Endeavour you can even bring your own fish and chips. My favourite, the Duke of York, which is at the bottom of the 199 steps is currently having a refurbishment but hopefully it won’t have lost any of its character when it reopens.

Take a boat trip

If the North Sea isn’t too rough when you visit, one of the most popular things to do in Whitby is to take a boat trip. There are quite a few options for boat trips, from quick 20-minute trips to see the town from the sea, to longer fishing and wildlife-watching trips.

If you’re lucky, you might also see whales, dolphins or porpoises on your boat trip. The best time of year to see whales and dolphins is June to October, when minke whales and white-beaked dolphins and minke whales follow shoals of fish swimming south from the Arctic.

There is no Garden at Janies sadly but her front steps make a great spot to sit and have a coffee first thing as the sun peeps though the rooftops. At the end of the day make sure you cosy up in front of the log burner with a good book or enjoy a film on the smart TV. Janie’s caters for younger children as well, a high chair and travel cot are included as well as a range of books and toys.
If you want to travel further afield by car St Ives is 10 miles away where you will find all sorts of activities and places to eat. For the ultimate experience head to the Minack Open Air Theatre at Porthcurnow and take in one of the fantastic shows.
